Soapnuts are the fruit of the soapnut tree (Sapindus saponaria), which grows in the tropical and subtropical regions of South and Central America, as well as in Asia and the Caribbean, where soapnuts have been used for washing for centuries.
As a fruit on the tree, the soapnut is orange in color and quite sticky. After the harvest in late spring, the soap nuts are dried. As a result of the drying, the soap nut is no longer sticky and has taken on a reddish brown / dark brown colour.
The real secret of the soap nuts is in the shell : this consists of up to 15% of so-called ” saponins “.” (lat. sapo = “soap”). These saponins, when agitated and shaken in water, form a soapy, stable foam . The inner, black kernel of the soap nuts, on the other hand, is neither suitable for washing nor for consumption.

When washing with soap nuts, however, it must be noted that these release active ingredients into the water during the entire washing process , i.e. also during the rinse cycles , which then get into the laundry. Therefore, these active ingredients can not be completely removed from the laundry by machine washing . If these active ingredients develop an irritating effect on the individual allergy sufferer, the soap nuts should be removed from the drum before the last rinse (press the rinse hold button, allow the water to be pumped out and then remove the sachet with the soap nuts). This means that no active ingredients can get into the water when rinsing .
