Onyx stone is a silicate mineral and a type of chalcedony, otherwise known as a micro-crystalline form of quartz stone. Unlike agate, another type of chalcedony, onyx is characterised by the almost parallel patterns across its surface. That’s why it is sometimes referred to as banded calcite as well. Due to the fact that marble is also made up of calcite, it is no surprise that onyx is often considered by some as a type of marble as well.
